jreimer asked: Does anyone know why it was popular to pose with a cigar for a portrait? I have several old family photos where this is the case and it's got me curious

Answer:

Here’s an interesting link I’ve found on kids and cigars: http://www.nationalcigarmuseum.com/Special_Exhibits/Children_and_cigars.html

I’ve seen a fair amount of photos of kids either acting like adults or dressed like them and I think the cigar is part of that — I suppose they just thought it was cute when kids mimicked adults. Even the way they are posed, in the “portrait” type ones, seems adult-like… legs crossed, straight face, slight sense of swagger ;) etc. Anyway, I’m not sure if there was a real reason for kids and cigarettes. I too would be interested in more info on this. :)
